I was standing on Market Street in San Francisco just outside the Moscone Convention Center when it hit. I could see the cloud rising from the Bay Bridge as the upper deck fell down, and one of the buildings across from me was a brick edifice from before the 06 quake, and its facade just dissolved. I grabbed a cab to Nob Hill, to the Mark Hopkins where I was staying, and immediately filled the bathtub and the sink with water. Went down about 10 flights of stairs and sat in the lobby in the dark. Finally managed to get out of SF a couple of days later. My 11 month old daughter, my wife said, had been screaming all afternoon, and immediately became quiet and went to sleep after the earthquake hit. She somehow knew it was coming. They were staying in Santa Rosa while I was attending a convention in SF.
